FRANCIS WILLIAM Binstead

228 Francis William Binstead
Born 15 October 1880 at Coomera, Queensland, Australia. As a boy, he was very fond of fishing on the Coomera River and loved horses. He did a stint as a jockey at the local Oxenford and Southport racecourses. He was a small man and had black hair and vivid blue eyes. About 1898 he went to work as a Jackaroo at Rocklands Station, Camooweal, North West Queensland, a property managed (1884-1914) by his great-uncle Gus Glissan. This property measured about 3,000 square miles and it would take Francis a week to ride the boundary.
At Camooweal, Francis met Jessie Eliza Fogarty who was a clerk and saleswoman in Synnott's general store. He married her 7 February 1906 at the Court House, Camooweal. Jessie was born 5 January 1888 at Bourketway, Normanton, Queensland, the daughter of William Fogarty and Mary Jane Butler. After the marriage they moved to Canungra where Francis worked at the saw mill. Later they moved to Southport and in 1911 to Sydney where their first home was at 10 Kippax Street. They bought a newsagency in Abercrombie Road, Sydney which Jessie ran while Francis drove trams. Francis joined in the Big Strike in the early 1920's whereafter he went to work for Mark Foys, in Devonshire Street, Surrey Hills, Sydney as a driver of horse and wagon and also looking after their stable of horses. During the Great Depression, he was laid off by Mark Foys as he was a Protestant and they were a Catholic-owned company. During this period their newsagency also failed. He had to go on the dole and Jessie supplemented their income by selling illegal lottery tickets for Rufe Naylor, a well-known Sydney character who was so successful that the government introduced legal lotteries. Francis only managed to obtain employment in 1938 at Metters as a hammerman breaking up pig iron. Francis died of heart disease 25 July 1954 at 38 Regent Street, Kogarah, aged 74 years, and was buried 27 July 1954 at Woronora Cemetery, Sydney, New South Wales. Jessie later married Tom Newberry and they lived at 75 Valley Road, Wentworth Falls, New South Wales. Jessie died 18 October 1982 in Sydney and was buried in Woronora Cemetery, Sydney. [pc77/9]
